Islamic Codicology Workshop
8-12 September 2008, University Library, Cambridge
The Islamic Manuscript Association, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge, announce a workshop on Islamic codicology, to be held in September 2008. The proposed workshop will be led by Professor François Déroche, Director of Studies at the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes in Paris and author of the book Islamic Codicology an Introduction to the Study of Manuscript in Arabic Script. Prof. Déroche will select original manuscript sources at the University Library of Cambridge as the basis for this workshop.
The five day program will provide an overview of Islamic codicology with a comparative focus on the methods of localising and dating Islamic manuscripts. The primary focus will be on technical aspects of writing materials and their typological significance, on the formation of a codex, including features like quiring and ruling, as well as the shape of the page and script. The workshop is open to post-graduate students, scholars and professionals in the field of Islamic studies as well as all TIMA members.

The cost of this workshop is of £350. Places are limited to 15 and 5 places are available free of charge. If you would like to be considered for a scholarship please contact us detailing your financial situation.
Applications will close the 31st July 2008, and the successful participants will be informed after this date. Demand for places in the workshop is expected to be very high, therefore it cannot be guaranteed that all applicants will be successful.
