Introductory Codicology Workshop
1-4 September 2007
The workshop was led by Prof. Dr. Jan Just Witkam, Professor of Paleography and Codicology of the Islamic World at Leiden University. The participants were extremely fortunate to view such a large number of manuscripts from the Cambridge University Library collection. The organisers wish to thank the Library and particularly Yasmin Faghihi and Kristine Rose for this.

Professor Witkam
Professor Jan Just Witkam (Leiden, 1945) presently occupies the chair of Paleography and Codicology of the Islamic World in Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands.
From 1974-2005 he was curator of Oriental collections in Leiden University Library, which are well known for their rare Islamic materials. He has been teaching ‘Islamic manuscripts’ in Leiden University since 1980. In 1978 he published the beginnings of a paleographical atlas of Arabic. From 1982 he has been publishing the Catalogue of Arabic manuscripts in the library of the University of Leiden and other collections in the Netherlands. In 1986 he founded the journal Manuscripts of the Middle East, of which 6 volumes have appeared until its discontinuation in 1992.
Many of Prof. Witkam’s numerous publications on Islamic manuscripts are now also available on the website http://www.islamicmanuscripts.info, which he started in 2006. At present he is publishing inventories of oriental manuscripts in that same website.
