Introduction
The Conservation Interest Group was formed at the Second Islamic Manuscript Conference in 2006. The group is directed by a sub-committee who set priorities for action and determine the remit of the group's work.
Unlike other sub-committees whose work is involved with the creation of tools for access to and reproduction of the manuscripts, the work of conservators deals with the object itself and any conservation could alter the original nature of the object. For this reason, the sub-committee feels inclined to refrain from prescriptive information.
Statement of Ethics
The Islamic Manuscript Association Conservation Sub-committee acknowledge the sensitivity of the community in handling the object. We conservators need to educate ourselves about appropriate materials, handling, attitudes and avoid treatments that can compromise the "sacredness" of the object - be this religious, spiritual or symbolic.
