King's College London was founded in 1829 by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington; in 1836, it became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. The Great Hall forms part of the Grade I listed King's Building and was constructed between 1829 and 1831 to a design by Sir Robert Smirke, also the architect of the British Museum.

Situated on the ground floor of the King's Building, the Great Hall can be accessed via the university's modern entrance on the Strand or through the King's Building's historic entrance. The Great Hall is accessed by the doors seen above in the entrance foyer. The Quadrangle outside is accessible from the Strand, via the Embankment's terrace, or through the pathway by the east wing of Somerset House (before the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Courtyard).
