2009 Codicology Workshop
7-11 September, 2009
Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and University Library, Cambridge, UK
The Islamic Manuscript Association, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge, announces the third annual workshop on Islamic codicology, to be held 7-11 September 2009 at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Cambridge University Library. The workshop will be led by Professor François Déroche, Director of Studies at the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes in Paris and author of the book Islamic Codicology: an Introduction to the Study of Manuscript in Arabic Script.
The five-day programme will provide an overview of Islamic codicology with a comparative focus on the methods of localising and dating Islamic manuscripts. The primary focus will be on technical aspects of writing materials and their typological significance, and on the formation of a codex, including features like quiring and ruling, as well as the shape of the page and script.
