Introduction to Islamic Codicology Workshop

The Islamic Manuscript Association, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge, announces the fourth annual workshop on Islamic codicology, to be held 2-6 August 2010 at the Cambridge University Library. The workshop will be led by Professor François Déroche, Director of Studies at the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes in Paris and author of the book Islamic Codicology: An Introduction to the Study of Manuscripts in Arabic Script.
The five-day course will introduce the study of Islamic manuscript codices as physical objects. This will include an overview of writing supports, the structure of quires, ruling and page layout, bookbinding, ornamentation, tools and materials used in book production, and the paleography of book hands.
